CLASSROOM CLEANOUT
Support Education and Sustainability By Hosting A Classroom Cleanout
What is a classroom cleanout?
A Classroom Cleanout is an easy, impactful way for schools to give unused supplies a second life. At the end of the school year, Schoolhouse Supplies partners with local schools to collect new, surplus, and gently used classroom materials—such as school, office, and art supplies—that might otherwise be discarded.
These donated items are then sorted and distributed through our Free Store for Teachers. By participating in a Classroom Cleanout, schools help reduce waste, keep usable supplies out of landfills, and directly support students and teachers across our community.
Why host a classroom cleanout?
Hosting a Classroom Cleanout is a simple way to make a big impact. At the end of the school year, classrooms often have leftover supplies that are thrown away. A Classroom Cleanout ensures those materials don’t end up in landfills—and instead go directly to students and teachers who need them most.
By partnering with Schoolhouse Supplies, your school helps:
Support under-resourced students and teachers by providing free classroom supplies
Reduce waste by keeping usable materials out of landfills
Maximize the value of school resources by giving supplies a second life
Strengthen community impact by giving back to the community in a way that directly supports students
Increase leadership opportunities by having students lead the event
Classroom Cleanouts are easy to organize, meaningful for staff, and create a tangible, positive impact—turning end-of-year cleanouts into an opportunity to give back.
Who Can Organize a Classroom Cleanout?
Anyone! Classroom Cleanouts are flexible, community-powered events—and there’s no one “right” way to host one. Whether you’re a student group, school staff, or a community organization, you can tailor a cleanout to fit your people, your space, and your schedule.
Here’s how different groups often make it work:
Students
Student-led cleanouts are a great way to build leadership and community while making a real impact. Students can help collect supplies from classrooms, organize donation stations, sort items, and assist with packing. This can be part of a service-learning project, club activity, leadership program, or end-of-year initiative—giving students hands-on experience in teamwork and community care.
Teachers
Teachers often organize cleanouts at the end of the school year while packing up classrooms. Instead of throwing away gently used or surplus supplies, teachers can set aside items for donation. This can be done individually, by grade level, or as a whole-school effort—making end-of-year clean-up easier while ensuring supplies get a second life in another classroom.
PTAs / PTOs
PTAs and PTOs are ideal organizers for school-wide cleanouts. They can help coordinate communication, set collection dates, arrange drop-off locations, and recruit volunteers to help sort and box supplies. PTAs often turn cleanouts into a community moment—bringing families together to support sustainability and local teachers.
School Administrators & Staff
School leaders can support classroom cleanouts by designating collection spaces, setting timelines, and encouraging participation across the school. A school-led cleanout is an effective way to streamline summer clean-up, reduce waste, and ensure usable supplies stay in circulation rather than ending up in the landfill.
Classroom Cleanouts are simple, impactful, and adaptable—no matter who leads them. We’ll work with you to make the process easy and aligned with your goals. To learn more or get started, submit an inquiry below.
